Review: “A Minecraft Movie” anticipated flop

A decade after a ‘Minecraft Movie’ was announced, the first trailer was released and has been met with very negative reviews. Many were annoyed with the style in which they made the Minecraft world and their mobs. Not only that, but the main characters were filmed in live action in contrast to the rest of the style. 

When I watched the movie, I had some of the same views as many others. I disliked the live action characters, they felt very out of place, especially Steve as Jack Black. I believe when it comes to these characters, they should’ve been animated to fit the Minecraft style. When I see the live action characters it instantly reminds me of the second and third “Jumanji” movies, a cast of 4 main characters with another player found later on. As much as I like those movies, I hope the Minecraft movie’s plot does not copy Jumanji’s. 

Although there is so much negativity towards the ‘Minecraft Movie’ trailer so far, I did enjoy how the Minecraft world itself came out. It reminds me of how the world of the ‘Super Mario Movie’ was made. It’s interesting how they made the world still full of cubes but with a more realistic texture to them. The way they made the blocks are much more realistic, matching the live-action. They added much more detail to the blocks, bringing real life to Minecraft.

The future of the ‘Minecraft’ movie is very unclear. Many people want them to redesign the Minecraft Movie like how they did with the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie after many complaints about how they designed Sonic. There have been many fan redesigns of the live action characters turning them into animated Minecraft characters. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any signs of a redesign for this very anticipated movie.
